Canopy Heights
This app merges information on canopy heights and Synthetic-Aperture Radar (SAR) backscatter to visualize an intuitive carbon structure for the year 2022, within a test site in the Paraguayan Chaco.
- Canopy height estimations are based on a weighted multi-temporal averaging of canopy height estimates that were derived from an approach developed by Nico Lang et al.
- SAR data is gamma0 corrected, HV backscatter of ALOS-2, averaged over a 2022 period; extracted from Google Earth Engine.
This method shows large agreements in carbon stock estimations, as expected, yet also highlights divergences of the datasets that indicate areas of uncertainty. The general assumption is that areas with large canopy height have higher backscatter, which generally is the case.
